Greetings from 2016

Photography has changed a lot since I started this blog in 2007. For me, photography has always been more an art form than documentation. I wanted to play with analog materials and shoot film, mostly crappy pictures and sometimes tack-sharp pictures of crappy landscapes.

Nowadays people are shooting too much photos. Even analog photography is temporary. You like it in instagram and then forgot them.

I still have my 500cm Hasselblad and chance to develop my b&w films. I should still shoot film but for being honest, I'm not as interested in it as I was ~seven years ago, before instagrams and snapchats.

Summer 2014 and Joutsa Chopper Show 2014 was great. There was some hot rod cars too. Handheld shot with my Hasselblad 500cm. Portra160 film, skanned with Epson v750. I really need to print this in 100x100cm size. And by the way, I made an instagram-account. There will be some cellphone-flicks of random stuff that I like. Nick @j.mikola

One painting that I made last summer in Lapland, in Northern Finland. There was no streets around.

And big things has happened and news published during the summer 2014. I'll make one public 3D-artwork/scupture in the city of Oulu next year. I'll keep you informed...

I have two bikes. I already posted the first one. This one is motorized. Summer 2013.

I built a camera maybe three years ago. Today I shot the first papers with it. Its kind of combination of pinhole-camera and largeformat-camera. No digital screens, no finders. Its just a box with 135/4.5 lens. In these pictures I used f4.5 aperture.

Last Sunday I wanted to play around with DSLR. Sometimes shooting digital is fun too. This is my cycle.

Greetings from darkroom. I try to start darkroom-working again. This super-dirty cloud was exposed in 2011, loaded in developing tank in 2011 and developed today.

Early summer morning at Turku, 2013. Shot with Zeiss Ikon 6x4,5 folder. Film was Kodak Portra 160. Simply amazing film, scanned with Nikon Coolscan 9000.

Sometimes I'm just amazed how flexible material film is. This experiment is shot in 100% moonlight, in the middle of night somewhere in the beginning of December. I should shoot more photos in moonlight...

Howdy! I`ll should write some words about what I have done and what plans I have. My old reliable laptop died some months ago, and I haven`t had a proper computer at home for editing pictures. It is a major reason why I haven`t updated anything for a looong time. I have a computer, PC, but no photoshops or lightrooms. And I really enjoy it! - Minor reason is my work. I have been working like a real working man. My work is a lot of printing pictures and developing some 135-films, and I see a LOT of dogs and babies etc celebration-pictures in 10x15cm size. Hundreds of dogs. And hundreds of passport-pictures. So, quite often after my workday I just don`t want to see photographs anymore. I want to deal with a totally different medias, and I have for excample drawn a bit. And been planning for art-related "things"/exhibitions/works. - And, as you might well know, this time of the year is really a challenge for photographers in northern Finland. The fact is, that I want to push my skills and knowledge about photography, and now I have started to shoot night. Some finnish photographers have shot landscapes in moonlight in really northern Finland during the December and January, but I live here in Rovaniemi and I don't want to copy their photos. - I have started to shoot my environment in moonlight with good ol' Mamiya rz67. This is only an excample, the first photo of upcoming serie of my "moonshine". I used portra800 film, but I underdeveloped this film a bit. Anyway, I changed the developer few days ago and quite soon I'm ready to see some serious results. Can you expose film if there is simply no light? And how long exposures are possible? The longest exposure has now been 6 hours, at f4,5. Can you do that with your ixus? I bet you cant. - And, in my head I have had an idea of "the" websites. Maybe they are coming. I hope so.

Thats what I call photographic art. Haha. Almost like the hipstamatic frame, but the difference bethween film and iphone is that you can't actually print the iphone photos in large size. This is cross-processed Kodak E100VS film, shot with my super Felica. Rovaniemi 2011(?).

This blog has been quiet, I have some good news to tell you.

Finally we have started to make official JMIKOLA.COM website/cv. I hope we can publish the website during this 2012 spring. It will be a collection of the best photographs and whatever art-stuff I have ever done. But don't worry, there will be also a blog where I can write whatever nonsense.. For a long time I have had a feeling this blogger is not eough for me. This has been a good place to publish pictures, but this is not 100% what I want. I'll keep you in touch during this spring. It's gonna be huge!
